How to Celebrate National Take Your Dog To Work Day
This year, National Take Your Dog To Work Day will be on June 24th. Here at Patio Pacific Pet Doors, we believe strongly in bringing out dogs to work. After all, we’re a company who lives and breathes all things dogs.
As experts in the field of having office dogs, here are a few tips and tricks for keeping dogs at the office.
Make Sure Your Dog Is Social
If you’re going to bring your dog to work, make sure that they are social and ready to hang out with others. If your dog is shy or anxious around other dogs or humans, then an office environment might not be the best place for them.
Dogs with separation anxiety are especially prone to having trouble socializing with other dogs.
Before bringing your dog to the office, work on getting them acclimated to meeting new people and dogs in a calm and friendly manner. This guide should help you socialize your dog, but for severe cases, a specialist may need to be called in.
Prep Your Office For Dogs
Before you bring your dog to the office, make sure that your office space is a safe space for them to hang out and play. Keep all wires out of reach and sight so that your dog is not tempted to chew on them. You should also make sure anything fragile or heavy, such as a computer, is anchored down so that it cannot be knocked off your desk or cabinet.
If you are the owner of a company who wants to turn your office into a space meant for dogs, then you should look into giving your office dogs a space of their own, such as a space on an enclosed outdoor area for them to go to the bathroom and run around them.
If you’re worried about how disruptive having to let the dogs in and out of the enclosed area would be, then you should consider installing a pet door so that they can go outside without disturbing any important meetings.
Bring Undisruptive Toys
While offices are not the best environment for playtimes, that doesn’t mean you dog still can’t have fun. To keep your dog from getting bored, make sure you bring some treats and non-disruptive toys to keep them entertained. This means ditching the tennis ball and squeaky chew toy for a bone or a chew rope.
Don’t forget to give your coworkers the opportunity to play with your dog with their toys. There’s nothing like spending a fifteen minute break getting to play tug-a-war with a happy dog.
Bring Food, Water, and Treats
If the office is going to become your dog’s second home, then you should make sure they they are well-cared for while you do your work. Make sure to bring your dog’s food and water bowl, ensuring they are fed and hydrated throughout the workday.
You can also bring treats to reward your dog for good behavior. You can also use them to motivate your dog to learn more tricks during your lunch break.
Have Cleaning Supplies On Hand
While having an office pet door to a bathroom area is ideal, you may have to wait until your break to put your dog on a leash to let them go to the bathroom. This might mean that there will be a few times when your dog can’t wait until break time.
That’s why it’s important to have all necessary cleaning supplies on hand, that way you can clean any accidents before the smell can disturb your coworkers. Additionally, if you have carpeted floors, cleaning any stains as soon as possible can help prevent the smell from lingering for years to come.
Some supplies you should consider getting include:
- Disinfectant (look for ones that are odor eliminating and tough on stains)
- Rags
- Poop bags
- An air freshener
If you have to greet customers on a regular basis, you should also look into also keeping a lint roller in your desk to keep you clothes clean of dog hair.
