Endura Flap Dog Door for Walls Installation Video
Video Transcription
Hi! Today we are going to install an Endura Flap in this demonstration wall. You will find all the instructions and parts that you need in the box with your Endura Flap. The tools that I will be using today include a drill with an extra-long ⅜" bit, a reciprocating saw, a jigsaw, clamps, a level, tape measure, glasses and gloves, a pencil, scissors, and a wooden block and a rubber mallet (you can also use a hammer). It is imperative to avoid wall studs, electrical wire, and piping. So if you don't have experience cutting through walls, we highly recommend hiring a professional.
STEP ONE
First, you want to put one drop of Loctite in each of the closed barrel nuts. Screw each of the barrel nuts onto the end of a threaded rod and set it aside for now.
STEP TWO
It is a good idea to measure your pet to make sure that you install the pet door at the right height. For a single flap, you want it to be about an 1-1/4" above the top of the back, and for the double flaps, we want it to be at least 2". Be sure to get a level to ensure that your hole will come out straight.
STEP THREE
You will need to drill four holes in the corners of the template. These holes need to be level, so professional help is recommended. You can use a drill that has a level built-in, which will help you keep your holes straight.
STEP FOUR
When you are drawing your lines, this is a great time to correct for levelness. The next step is actually to connect the dots that you made in your wall with your reciprocating saw. Wear gloves and your safety glasses. We are going to double-check your measurements on the outside of the wall just like we did on the inside.
STEP FIVE
You'll want to put weather stripping on both the interior and the exterior frames. It is a good idea to put it so that the gap will be at the bottom. When you are pressing the weatherstripping into the channel, be sure not to stretch it because it will compress over time, and you want it to have a little bit of extra wiggle room in there. You can use scissors or just tear the ends off.
STEP SIX
With a jigsaw or bandsaw, trim all four pieces so that they are ¼ inch shorter than the thickness of the wall. A jigsaw blade is provided. Using clamps to secure the pieces will help you make the cut. I also used a wooden block to guide the jigsaw; this makes everything easier. You can see how I am using the piece of wood to guide the jigsaw.
Be careful to trim the correct side. Do not trim the side of the short tunnel pieces that attach to the top and bottom of the flap frame. Also, do not trim the side of the long tunnel pieces with three small holes in them that attach to the sides of the flap frame.
STEP SEVEN
Remove the two screws on either side of the top of the interior frame, which is the one with the locking cover. The exterior frame will have screw holes that are pre-threaded so that you will be able to see the shine from the metal when you look at the hole.
Single flap models have a joggle, so you are going to need to bend the tabs in the same direction as the recess. When this is going down, you are going to put these up. Double flap models do not have a joggle so that you can put these in either direction.
Make sure that you get the screws straight so that it builds into the channel it is supposed to. You can either bend the tabs after attaching it to the frame or pre-bend them. Just bend them as far as you can, then you can put the screw in. You can bend these tabs before you install it, I just find it easier to do it after screwing it in.
Once you have your top and bottom tunnel pieces on, you are going to match up the side pieces, which are the longer pieces. Make sure that the tunnel pieces slide all the way together so that there are no gaps. Once you have the tunnel pieces together, you are going to push the tabs so that they actually interlock with each other.
Next, you are going to apply a bead of the silicone sealant on the inside of the tunnel. You do need to apply this silicone sealant to all seams inside of the tunnel; you can use the applicator tip or carefully squeeze out without the tip if that is easier.
STEP EIGHT
The interior frame is the one with the tunnel pieces you can out that in first and then it is really helpful to have a partner on the outside so you can hand the exterior frame and they can help you put it into the hole. Line it up so that you can see light through the holes. That way, you can make sure that you can get your threaded rod all the way through.
STEP NINE
Then you can use your threaded rod with the closed barrel nut on them and guide it through the exterior frame. If it helps you guide the rod, you can stick your hand through and touch the hole on the opposite side. You can use a mirror or even a smartphone to help you guide that rode to the opposite frame if you don't have a partner to help you out. Use a level to make fine adjustments for your pet door.
STEP TEN
With a pet door leveled and all four threaded rods tightened, wiggle the ends of the threaded rods that are protruding on the exterior side until the ends snap off.
STEP ELEVEN
Finish caulking by applying a bead of the silicone sealant along the inside of the tunnel where it meets with the exterior frame. Be careful to seal all gaps and seams to minimize the chance of water damage to the wall.
STEP TWELVE
Once you are all done, the final step is to put the hole plugs in all the screw holes. We are going to use a wooden block and a mallet ( you can also use a hammer), and that is it, your wall mount is all installed!
Replacing the Flap in the Endura Flap Dog Door for Walls
Video Transcript
STEP ONE
To replace the Endura Flap, first remove the hole covers.
STEP TWO
Use a magnetic Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws.
STEP THREE
Before you replace your flap, be sure to take off the pivot washers. That way, you can stretch out the bellows to ensure a better seal.
STEP FOUR
Now that the assembly that holds the flap has been removed look at the side for a metal rod at the top of the frame. This is the rod that the flap hangs on.
It may, or may not, have small circular metal retaining rings at the end of the rod. If it does, remove the rings by forcing them off with a flathead screwdriver, you only need to remove one. You can then push the rod through the frame until it comes out on the other side. You can now remove the flap.
STEP FIVE
Make sure that the magnets line up. Guide the rod back through the flap and frame. If you did have retaining rings, push the new ones on by holding one side of the rod in place with a pen while pushing the collar on with your finger.
Each side only needs one ring. Make sure that before pushing on the retaining ring that you put the rings on a flap surface to double-check which side the teeth are facing.
The teeth should be bent out and facing away from the flap when installed. If they are put on backwards, they can fall off and cause the flap rods to gradually fall out.
STEP SIX
The flap is now installed, and you can reinstall the assembly into your door or wall. When installing, make sure that you tighten the screws until the weatherstripping compresses, and the pet door touches the door or wall. Do not overtighten.
STEP SEVEN
Once the pet door is back in place, hammer the hole covers into the frame using a non-metal tool. Make sure that after the pet door is in place, that you reseal it properly to prevent any weather damage.
