Single Flap or Double Flap? Double flaps would provide more insulation for your home, perfect for climates that experience extreme hot or cold weather. This page is the double flap version, but if you live in a more temperate climate, single flaps would be enough.

Note: Endura Flap pet doors are not recommended for use by kittens or very small dogs. Cats have been successful using Small; however, a few have found the Medium difficult to use. We would not recommend using the Large or Extra Large or any of the double flap versions for cats.

  • Level
  • Jigsaw or reciprocating saw
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Measuring Tape

Please read instructions & notes thoroughly before beginning installation.

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: If you have not yet done so, check out this video on how to measure your pet for a pet door

If possible, remove the door from its hinges using a screwdriver and hammer to tap out the hinge pins. Lay the door flat for installation. Tape the provided template to the door. The top edge of the cut-out line should be at least 1 ¼" (3,2 cm) above the dog’s shoulders for single flaps, and at least 2” (5,1 cm) for double flaps.

Endura

Be careful not to cut too close to the bottom of the door as you may reduce the door’s strength. Level the top edge of the cut-out line.

Step 2: Once you are certain the pet door will work with your door, drill through the holes marked on the template with a 3/8" (9,5 mm) bit. Make sure your drill is kept level and drills all the way through the door.

Endura

Step 3: Draw lines to connect the outsides of the holes using a straight edge and/or level, then cut along the line with a saw. If your door is less than 1 3/8" (3,5 cm) thick, see special instructions on pages 4 & 5.

Endura

Step 4: Ensure the weather-stripping is firmly pressed in the groove on both frames.

Endura

Step 5A, SINGLE FLAP: Place the trim frame on the outside of the door and the flap frame on the inside. Skip to step 6.

Step 5B, DOUBLE FLAP: Apply silicone along the inside of the tunnel where it mates with the flap frame. Run a bead of silicone around the edges of the tunnel where it will meet the other frame.

Endura

Place the inside frame with the tunnel on the inside of the door to sandwich with the other flap frame. Take the exterior frame (without the tunnel) and place it on the outside of the door.

Step 6: Select appropriate screws and insert into the pet door from the inside. Do not fully tighten screws until all four screws are inserted and the pet door is leveled.

1 ¾" (4,4 cm) screws for single flaps in doors 1 3/8" (3,5 cm) thick

2 ¼" (5,7 cm) screws for 1 ¾" (4,4 cm) thick doors

2 ¾" (7,0 cm) screws for double flaps in doors 1 ¾" – 2 ¼" (4,4 cm – 5,7 cm) thick

Endura

Step 7: Once the pet door is leveled, tighten the screws so that the weather-stripping compresses and the frames touch the door. Do not over tighten.

Step 8: Use the wooden end of a hammer, rubber mallet, or other non-metal tool to tap in the hole plugs. You can also place a wood block on the hole plug and tap the block with a hammer.

DOORS LESS THAN 1 3/8" (3,5 cm) THICK

Endura

If your door is less than 1 3/8" (3,5 cm) thick, the trim frame needs to be cut down so that the door mount can fit into the door.

Step 1: Remove the foam weather-stripping before taking the frame apart. Set aside. Remove the four screws from the trim frame. Pull apart the trim frame. Do not remove the plastic corners attached to the ends of the trim frame pieces.

Endura

Step 2: If your door is 1" – 1 3/8" (2,5 cm – 3,5 cm) thick, cut all four trim frame pieces at the first line about 3/8" (9,5 mm) from the edge.

If your door is ½" – 1” (1,3 cm – 2,5 cm) thick, cut all four trim frame pieces at the line about ¾" (1,9 cm) from the edge.

Be sure to support the trim frame (a block of wood a couple inches shorter than the piece you are cutting is a good choice) so that it does not sit on the plastic corners attached to the ends while cutting.

Endura

Step 3: Reassemble the trim frame. If necessary, cut the screws from the packet used in step 6 to secure the pet door so they are ½" (1,3 cm) longer than your door thickness. When cutting the screws, first thread a nut on so that after cutting, removing the nut will realign the threads of the screw.

Replace the weather-stripping when you are finished. Make sure the piece stops and ends at the bottom of the frame.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Make sure that you double check the total thickness of the door as the single and double flap models fit different ranges. The single flap fits doors from ½” – 1 ¾” (1,3 cm – 4,4 cm) thick and the double flap fits doors 1 ¾” – 2 ¼” (4,4 cm – 5,7 cm) thick. If you are using the double flap and your door is less than 1 ¾” (4,4 cm), you will need to build out with shims or weather-stripping to get the door to at least 1 ¾” (4,4 cm) in thickness for a tight fit.

PANELED DOORS

The best way to install the pet door is to have it straddle the recessed area of one of the panels. Have the pet door sit on the flat area in the middle, side, and below the recessed panel. The frame will cross the recessed area on the top, so you will be left with a gap. The easiest way to fill this gap is to get battens or shims from a local hardware store, and cut them to fit. When that gap is mostly filled, caulk the remaining areas to seal the doggy door to the surface of the people door. If the space is very irregular you can also use a squishy foam weather stripping, which will compress down for a tight fit. When finished, use caulking to seal the door.

FAQ

Can I install this door into my glass door?

No, this dog door cannot be installed into single or double pane glass. However, if you have a sliding door, you can get the Thermo Panel 3e, which has the same flap installed into a door insert.

What makes this door so great?

There has been lots of discussion as to why the Endura Flap doggy door is such a high performing pet door, but for engineers, pet supplies enthusiasts, or those looking for some more technical information, here is a 74-page dog door energy efficiency study‚ showing what makes it so special.

Can a large dog & cat use the same double flap door?

Our doors have a strong magnetic seal which may be too strong for a cat. However, if you have cats and dogs sharing a door, you can decrease the magnetic resistance of the threshold on large and extra-large sizes making it easier for a cat to use. For small or medium pet doors you can also offset the magnets on the Endura once the flap is installed.

Is this flap flexible?

The Endura Flap is slightly more rigid than other economy-style flaps, but it is a safe, soft, flexible flap

Does the door sound very loud when the dog goes in or out?

When the flap gets to its resting place there is a snapping sound when the magnets employ. This sound lets you know the door is doing its job sealing out the elements and keeping your heated or cooled air inside.

I do not have to contend with wind or rain, if I buy the single flap version of the wall dog door is it possible to add the second flap in the future?

It is possible, but it not simple and can be quite costly. You will need to purchase a new inner or outer frame with the flap as single flap and double flap frames are built differently.

Why is there a difference in pet door flap size for the single versus the double flap models?

Since each flap is dually walled making them 7⁄8" thick as the pet pushes through the first flap will actually hit the second flap. This makes it so that there is a loss of about 1" of space a the top of the endura double flap pet doors as they enter or exit.

Warranty

Endura Flap products have a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship under standard regular use. Damage caused by not using the product as intended, improper installation, and chewing is not covered under this warranty.

Excellent Product, Excellent Customer Service

I live in Colorado so bought the double flap. I have had my door for 8+ years and it is still going strong. I just called Customer Service (twice!) today for a problem I created. Solved the fix and my other question. I like that these dog doors are made in USA, have metal components and you are talking to real people if you need to call. I recommend Endura Flap wholeheartedly.

Excellent product

I've two largish dogs, one 65 and the other 85 lbs. The X-large Endura Flap door replaces one I bought from a different company. The reason I was shopping for a different doggie door is that the previous one would pop open in the strong winter wind coming in from the back yard. The wind was so strong that the door wouldn't just open a crack but would stay open at least 2 inches while the air rushed in. My heating bill was killing me. The workaround was to put the pop-on cover over the opening and place a chair in front of it to hold it shut. Hardly a solution worth keeping. I found this company and took the plunge to replace the doggie door that was less than a few months old. I'm so glad I did! The first thing I noticed was the sliding cover which is so much more secure than the flimsy pop-on cover from the previous unit. Not only would it keep the wind and dogs from barging in but it's a deterrent to human critters as well. The second thing I noticed is that I didn't need to use the sliding cover to keep the wind out. The Endura Flap door needs no help in this department. I've gone another winter with no issues at all. Dogs (and grandson) come in and out and the wind does not. It's a beautiful thing. An accidental happy surprise to me was in how much light this allows in. The previous unit's flap was tinted yellowish and had a soft pillow-like covering on it. The Endura Flap is clear and lets a lot of desired light into the room. What a bonus! I've moved to a new home and left the doggie door there for the new residents to use. I'm back now to order a new door for my new home. I installed the previous doggie door without removing the door before and plan to do so with this new one.
